Both games feature the MA5D Assault rifle, a new and improved design and version. While Halo 4 and Halo 5 may not be contentious entries in the series, one thing they both began to do right was bring some power and purpose back to the Assault Rifle. When developer 343 Industries took over the Halo series from Bungie, fans were curious and apprehensive to see which direction the series would get taken in. Despite the overhaul in looks, the performance of the Assault Rifle here leaves much to be desired and makes the gun one of the most disappointing in the series. While it can be useful in the game’s campaign on the lower difficulties, it quickly loses any power if you choose to take it up a notch against tougher opponents. this lack of ability to reduce shield strength carries over to the campaign, coinciding with the reintroduction of Elites as enemies. During the multiplayer, the gun is slow to take down shields and does minimal damage. Like Halo 3’s version, you only rely on the assault rifle if you have no other guns at your disposal. RELATED: Halo Side Characters Who Deserve Their Own Game However, the focus on the newly-introduced DMR squashes these chances very quickly and effectively. With the Battle Rifle not featured in Reach, this game was the perfect opportunity to allow the Assault Rifle the chance to shine.
While the actual design and look of Reach’s Assault Rifle is very different to its predecessors, the game yet again is unable to capitalize on the potential of the weapon. Another great Halo title that features a subpar Assault Rifle, Halo Reach’s MA37 Assault Rifle is another version that can be easily swapped out for many other guns.
